The Moriarty driveway problem: flat ground and clay
Most Moriarty lots are flat, and much of the valley floor has clay that swells when wet. A driveway paved flat on top of that clay has two strikes against it: water can't drain off the surface, and the ground underneath moves. The result is puddles, ice patches, heaving and cracks — often within a few years.
How we build Moriarty driveways
- Test the ground. We check soil and existing base at the estimate so the plan fits your site.
- Remove what won't hold. Topsoil and soft clay in the driveway footprint come out.
- Build in slope. We shape the subgrade with a crown or cross-slope so water always leaves the surface, and provide an outlet for it.
- Compact a real base. Aggregate base course placed and rolled in lifts — thicker where clay is present or trucks park.
- Pave and finish. Hot-mix asphalt compacted to the right thickness, with tapered edges and smooth transitions at the garage and road.
Gravel-to-asphalt in Moriarty
If you already have a gravel drive, much of that rock can become part of the new base, which lowers cost. We regrade it, add base where it's thin, compact it and pave. Learn more about conversions.
Long driveways on acreage
For long runs, consider asphalt for the parking area and the stretch near the house, with chip seal or millings the rest of the way. See typical prices in our cost guide.
Frequently asked questions
How thick should a Moriarty driveway be?
Commonly 2 to 3 inches of compacted asphalt over at least 4 to 6 inches of compacted base, with more base over soft clay or where heavy trucks park.
Can you fix my driveway that holds water?
Yes — usually by removing the pavement, regrading the base to drain, and repaving. Patching alone won't solve a drainage problem.
Do you pave long ranch driveways in Moriarty?
Yes, often combining asphalt near the house with chip seal or millings for the long run.
