Paving near the Manzano Mountains
Tajique is a small mountain village in Torrance County on the east side of the Manzano Mountains, near where NM-337 meets NM-55. It's one of the most rural communities we serve: forested lots, long dirt and gravel drives, and roads that cross drainages coming off the mountains. Elevations are high and winters are real, with snow and long freeze-thaw seasons.
Our approach out here
For most Tajique properties, the right answer is a combination rather than one surface everywhere:
- Regrade and crown the whole drive so it sheds water — the foundation of everything else.
- Culverts at drainages sized for mountain runoff.
- Hot-mix asphalt on steep pitches, at the house, and in parking and turnaround areas.
- Chip seal or compacted millings on the long, gentler run to the road.
Combining trips to save cost
Because Tajique is farther from our Edgewood base, we often schedule work here alongside other projects in Chilili, Estancia and the southern valley. If you're flexible on timing, ask about scheduling with other jobs in the area — it can help keep mobilization costs down.
Snow and maintenance
Mountain winters are hard on any surface. A paved or chip-sealed drive plows far better than dirt or gravel, and a spring check for cracks — sealed before the next winter — keeps small problems from becoming washouts.

Frequently asked questions
Do you travel to Tajique?
Yes. We serve Tajique and the Manzano Mountain communities, and we try to schedule work here alongside other nearby projects to keep costs reasonable.
What's the best surface for a long mountain driveway?
Usually a combination: a properly crowned base throughout, asphalt on steep sections and near the house, and chip seal or millings on gentler stretches.
Can you fix a driveway that washes out at a drainage?
Yes — typically with a properly sized culvert and armored outlets, or a reinforced dip for larger flows.
