Paving in the Manzano foothills
Chilili is a historic rural community along NM-337 (South 14) in the foothills of the Manzano Mountains, south of Tijeras. The country is rolling and wooded with piñon and juniper, homes sit on large lots, and roads cross arroyos that run hard during monsoon storms. Elevations here run around 7,000 feet, so winters are cold and the freeze-thaw season is long.
What Chilili properties need
- Arroyo crossings. Driveways that cross washes need culverts or engineered dips that can pass storm flows without washing out.
- Erosion control. On rolling ground, runoff concentrates quickly. Swales and rock-lined outlets protect pavement edges.
- Durable surfaces on grades. Hot-mix asphalt holds on slopes where gravel scours away.
- Cost-effective long runs. Chip seal or millings for long access drives, asphalt where traffic and slopes demand it.
Private and shared roads
Many roads in the Chilili area are private or shared among several properties. We can grade, crown and surface these roads and break the estimate down so neighbors can share the cost. See our private road paving page.
Plan around the season
With cool nights at this elevation, the window for hot-mix paving and sealcoating runs roughly late spring through early fall. Grading, culverts and base work can sometimes be done in a wider window, so a project can be prepped ahead of paving.

Frequently asked questions
Can you build a driveway across an arroyo?
Yes, with the right crossing — usually a culvert sized for the drainage area, or a reinforced dip where flows are large. We'll evaluate it on site.
Do you serve properties along NM-337?
Yes, from Tijeras south through Chilili and on toward Tajique.
Is chip seal good in the foothills?
On long, gentler runs, yes. On steep sections, hot-mix asphalt is usually more durable.
